RE: Assembly Bill 17 (Holden) – Student Transit Pass Program-- SUPPORT
Dear Assembly Member Holden
I would like to express my strong support for Assembly Bill 17, which will provide low-cost transit passes for K-12 and college students under the Student Transit Pass Program.
The benefits AB 17 offers are widespread. The bill will have the effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing Vehicle Miles Traveled, as well as overall petroleum use by motorists. This in turn will improve quality of life and health of all Californians. Moreover, reports suggest that providing students access to quality public transit options during school-age years increases the likelihood that students will develop lifelong ridership habits. Creating a program of this nature increases access and mobility for public transit's core ridership and helps maintain sustainable, vibrant communities.
AB 17 will provide students and public schools the opportunity to work with regional transit providers to develop innovative student transit programs. The Student Transit Pass Program will provide low-cost, effective transportation options to budget conscious students, which will reduce the state’s overall greenhouse gas emissions.
Thank you for authoring this important legislation.
Sincerely,
