In order for Mid-City CAN members to come together for action on areas
of common interest, Momentum Teams have been developed to provide direction
and leadership. Momentum Teams are self-directed and come and go as
needs and issues arise within the community. All members of Mid-City
CAN are welcome to participate in Momentum Teams. Below is a list of
the current Momentum Teams and the work they are doing here in Mid-City.

San Diego Live and Play Smoke-Free Project
San Diego Live & Play Smoke-Free Project’s long-term goal
is to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), by focusing on two policy
goals: (1) Smoke free multi-unit housing complexes: Work with landlords,
managers, apartment management companies and city officials to develop
smoke-free policies for multi-unit housing complexes to reduce exposure
of SHS. (2) Smoke free parks: Work with local leaders, elected officials
and the community to improve compliance of the San Diego Smoke-Free Parks
and Beaches Ordinance
Our project is focused on working with the community, by strengthening
the relationships developed with local collaboratives, community groups
including youth and parent groups, and schools. In order to effectively
impact change at a larger level, we are educating our partners to advocate
for policy change that would help to decrease the impact of secondhand
smoke. Participants continue to engage in activities that include prevention
of tobacco use, working to create safe and healthy housing conditions,
and educating the community about the many services available to them.
San Diego Live & Play Smoke-Free Project invites individuals interested
in tobacco control and prevention to get involved. Prevention advocates,
community members, landlords, elected officials and lawmakers must work
together on tobacco control efforts so we can make a positive lasting
impact in the lives of all San Diegans. For more information contact:

Teen Sexual Health (TSH) Momentum Team
Join us at our next meeting at the Price Building at 4305 University
Avenue, Suite 350, San Diego, CA 92105 on Thursday, September 17, 4-5
pm. We will continue to meet the third Thursday of the month, same time,
same place. Find out more about TSH’s online and offline activities
at our google group site: http://groups.google.com/group/mid-city-can-tsh?hl=en.
The Teen Sexual Health Momentum Team is a community-based collaborative
that implements a pro-active, comprehensive approach in promoting and
reinforcing healthy sexual attitudes, behaviors and lifestyles amongst
Mid-City teens. The TSH Momentum Team works to increase the awareness
and knowledge of the social, physical and emotional aspects of teen/adolescent
sexual health and well-being; mobilize communities to provide environments
that support healthy lifestyles, and work with community groups and
local government agencies to create policies and system changes that
affect teen sexual health. Please check out our google
groups site to catch a glimpse at the postings, projects, and discussions
we are having around teen sexual health and come to our meetings to
get involved!
The Teen Sexual Health Momentum Team thanks all of the nearly 300 participants
who attended CORE on Thursday, June 18th at the Jacobs Center. Check

Q&A:
- What is the process?: This is an organic process
that is self informing; what this means is that it is very fluid and
flexible and as new data comes to light we adapt. Information on the
process plan can be found on our website www.midcitycan.org.
- What's the plan? Or, where's the plan for the next ten years?:
There is no plan. YOU are the plan... we are building it together
and hope to have it done by Feb. 2010. You can find the latest documents
on our website www.midcitycan.org.
- When do we meet and how do meet other teams?: You
decide when to meet and how often. Team meeting schedules will be posted
on our website weekly. These are all public meetings and anyone can
come. If you anticipate special logistical issues let me know at dross@midcitycan.org.
- Is this for money?: This is for the community.
- What about the grants?: The California Endowment
will be releasing new grant making guidelines in the future go to www.calendow.org
to stay up to date.
- What kind of resources are there to help us?: There
are some resources to support resident involvement. However, this is
not a free-ride... as with all momentum teams and collaborations, organizations
and community leaders must leverage their own resources, expertise,
and funds to make it work. Mid City CAN encourages you to connect with
the resource teams by contacting midcitycan@gmail.com.
The endowment will be providing technical assistance and training as
we move along.
- How can I learn about the planning process?
To learn more about the Building Healthy Communities (BHC) Planning
Process in City Heights please read the planning process proposal document.
The document can be found on the Mid-City CAN website in English, Spanish,
Somali, and Vietnamese.
- We just finished the BHC Open House, what will happen next?
The open house was an overwhelming success! We are now entering a new
phase in the planning process that will focus on the creation of a logic
model. This will occur in a series of structured sessions. Each momentum
team will be assigned a facilitator to work with them in these sessions.
In the month of October teams are being asked to only meet one time
and then to wait until they are contacted by Mid-City CAN staff to coordinate
scheduling with their facilitator. Teams with on-going projects, such
as the Food Justice Momentum Team, should continue as normal but will
also be contacted to schedule some sessions.
- Can the House Meeting Leaders conduct a survey, outreach
materials, or help with research for my organization?
Although house meetings have come to a close, House Meeting Leaders
continue to be highly engaged and active in the Building Healthy Communities
(BHC) Initiative and they are not available to disseminate surveys,
outreach materials, or to conduct research. As of today they have completed
100 house meetings with over 820 participants.
- How can my organization best participate in the planning
process?
The best way for an organization to participate in the Building Healthy
Communities (BHC) Planning Process is to attend a momentum team. Organizations
are encouraged to consider participating in only one team and to consider
who the best person might be to participate in logic modeling.

Mid-City CAN is a community collaborative. Mid-City CAN is not a foundation
or endowment. Mid-City CAN does not fund individual organizations or
projects, and does not accept applications. However, the Mid-City CAN
Coordinating Council can provide letters of support for organizations

Some examples include; the Food Justice Momentum Team's work on the
City Heights Farmer's Market and the Teen Sexual Health Momentum Team's
