Artivism Brings Youth and Community Together
Mid-City CAN and The AjA Project are still riding high on the success of our Youth Pop Up Art Event at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park on July 31st, where we celebrated the incredible work of our 2026 Artivism students! More than 260 folks checked in at our table and the event brought community members together to experience the students’ inspiring artwork, enjoy poetry from the Memoria Terra Project poets, groove to music by Cumbia Machin, grab some free tacos, and get a sneak peek at the new playground designs coming to the park.
Guests explored four "Passport Stations" featuring the new Youth Council-designed tile mural in the restroom, the expanded Memoria Terra Poetry Walk, an Artivism Print Sale, and information about the two new playgrounds. The event was also featured on NBC 7 San Diego's 11 pm broadcast! Congratulations to our 2026 Artivism students on completing their project, and a huge thank you to everyone who came out and helped make the day such a fun and memorable celebration!

Breakfast for Dinner and Civic Learning
Mid-City CAN is thrilled to partner with the City of San Diego to host two community workshops this month, creating an opportunity for City Heights residents to learn more about how city government works and how they can get involved. The workshops are designed to make local government more accessible while giving residents a chance to ask questions, connect with their neighbors, and learn how their voices can help shape the community.
Workshop 1 was a success and Workshop 2 will take place on Thursday, August 20! Community members especially enjoyed our fun Breakfast for Dinner theme and feasted on chiles rellenos, green chilaquiles, pastries, and more while learning about the role city government plays in our everyday lives. San Diego City Clerk Diana Fuentes also joined us to share information and connect with community members. It was a great opportunity for residents to enjoy a meal together, meet new people, and learn more about how to make their voices heard.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make these workshops such a success! Be sure to RSVP for Workshop 2 which will feature a Mexican breakfast as well as Thai food! These workshops were made possible by the generous support of SANDAG.
