Dear Mayor Todd Gloria,
I am writing to urge you to fund the Mid-City CAN Youth Council’s Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park Campaign.
The City Heights Community Recreation Groups (CRG) recently voted to approve designs and renderings for two new playgrounds at Henwood Park (P24002). The project currently has enough funding to build the toddler lot for children ages 2-5. However, we are requesting an additional $1.5 million from the City of San Diego’s FY26 budget to complete the much-needed upgrades, specifically the playground for children ages 5-12 and the Adult & Youth Fitness Area.
It has taken decades for the park to receive these essential improvements, and it is crucial that all areas of the park are upgraded now. Once these upgrades are completed, it is likely that it will be another 20 to 30 years before Henwood Park receives another renovation. This park is an essential resource for the diverse City Heights community, serving as a vital space for community engagement, health, recreation, and more.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
Tot Lot to get more Play Structures!
Thanks to over two years of dedicated advocacy by Youth Council, they successfully secured $1.75 million from the City of San Diego's budget. The funding will be used to update the playground in the park's northeastern corner (the Tot Lot), adding new play equipment, ADA access, seating, and shade to create a safer, more enjoyable space for young children.
City Heights community members were asked for their input on the desired features for the new playground, and the top three requests were swings, seesaws, and spinners. Other exciting features are slides and climbing structures for children to enjoy. The shaded areas will provide relief during warm, sunny days.
Selection of the playground design was made on March 18, 2025 during the City Heights Community Recreation Groups meeting with Youth Council members in attendance.
Youth Council and Mid-City CAN hope that you are excited about the design and upcoming changes coming to Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park! However, advocacy continues for the rest of the park.
On March 25, 2025, Youth Council met with Matt and Lucero, members of Mayor Todd Gloria's staff, to share updates on the remarkable progress of their Henwood Park renovation campaign. They also requested additional funding to upgrade the playground for children ages 5 to 12 and to add a fitness area for both adults and youth. Our Step-Up program interns also participated in the meeting.
Youth Council continues to meet with councilmembers and will speak during the upcoming City of San Diego budget hearings in May 2025.
Youth Council thanks you for your support! Please Email Mayor Todd Gloria today!
