Youth Create Unforgettable Memories at Yosemite
The view from the top of the waterfall at Yosemite National Park was breathtaking and it's an experience that Mid-City CAN's Youth Council members will never forget.
"The climb was kind of hard and yes it was tiring. But I kept going until I saw the scenery and it was so nice! I got so many pictures!" said Sofia who said it was the first waterfall she saw up close. "I was in shock, I didn't think we would get so close. The scenery was so beautiful. There was this rocky stairs, it was so cute!"
For Van, the view at the top was nothing short of breathtaking. When he finally reached the summit, he was clearly blown away. “Wow, this is really high up!” was his immediate thought as he took it all in. He added that it was “Definitely harder than the rest of the trails.” Still, reaching the top made it unforgettable for him.
Thanks to the generous support of the Prebys Foundation and the Healing Through Nature initiative, Youth Council members spent four nights at Yosemite, giving them the chance to step away from their daily routines and experience something truly special. From the moment the trip began, there was a sense of excitement in the air. It was a chance to explore, connect, and create lasting memories together!
During the trip, youth were surrounded by Yosemite’s incredible scenery, from towering trees, breathtaking mountains, and peaceful lakes. Among the highlights were the daily hikes together to see the beautiful waterfalls at the park. Reaching the waterfalls was such a rewarding moment and being able to stand there as a group, taking it all in, made it so special. Youth also got to camp in tents which was a fun and new experience for many. Being outdoors, unplugged, and fully present made everything feel more exciting and meaningful.
Through group activities, shared meals, and time spent exploring, Youth Council members built stronger friendships and grew closer as a community.
Mid-City CAN is grateful to the Prebys Foundation for making this trip possible. Their support helped create an experience that was not only fun and exciting, but also meaningful and inspiring. Special thanks to Manuel of Excursiones Acuaticas for guiding our youth! The Yosemite trip created memories for youth that will last a lifetime.

Mid-City CAN’s Youth Justice Momentum Team was excited to welcome art instructor Rubén Alarcón and Brooke Florian from the Prison Arts Collective on March 26 for an engaging presentation and workshop. Our team members had the opportunity to explore creativity in a supportive space, guided by Rubén’s inspiring approach to art and self-expression. The Prison Arts Collective works to expand access to the transformative power of the arts by providing programming in prisons and for communities impacted by incarceration, grounded in the belief that art is a human right and a powerful tool for positive change.
During the workshop, participants took part in a reflective drawing activity centered around a rose. Each part of the drawing encouraged deeper self-reflection. The rose represented something they are grateful for or a positive aspect of their life, the thorn symbolized a challenge or stress they are currently facing, and the bud captured something they are looking forward to, offering hope, inspiration, and motivation. This creative exercise gave community members a unique way to express their thoughts and emotions while building connection with one another.

Mid-City CAN’s Networking Night returns on April 30, 2026 and we invite community members to save the date for an evening of connection, learning, and engagement! This event will focus on important housing issues impacting our communities, including a presentation and panel discussion on the Empty Homes Tax ballot measure in San Diego. Additional presentation and panel details will be announced soon.
Community members can look forward to a welcoming space to connect with others, enjoy food and drinks, and participate in meaningful conversations about housing justice and community solutions. To support accessibility and inclusion, childcare will be provided, and Spanish interpretation will be available throughout the evening. RSVP today!

The event will highlight critical civil liberties issues impacting our communities, including justice-impacted youth and mass incarceration, surveillance, and housing. This is a space to uplift community voice, creativity, and collective power for change.

Mid-City CAN is helping spread the word about the SR 94 Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan (CMCP). What is it?
The SR 94 CMCP is a joint effort by SANDAG and Caltrans District 11 to identify transportation improvements along the SR 94/Campo Road corridor, a key east–west route connecting Downtown San Diego to eastern parts of the county, including the Jamul Indian Village. The study looks at current conditions and explores ways to make travel more reliable, connected, and efficient.
This effort brings together agencies, tribal governments, community groups, and the public to shape practical solutions. The goal is to improve traffic flow while making the corridor safer and more accessible for everyone and to help secure funding for future projects. Community input is essential so please take a moment to share your feedback:

Los jóvenes crean recuerdos inolvidables en Yosemite
La vista desde la cima de la cascada en el Parque Nacional Yosemite fue impresionante, y es una experiencia que los miembros del Consejo Juvenil de Mid-City CAN nunca olvidarán.
“La subida fue un poco difícil y sí, fue cansada. Pero seguí adelante hasta que vi el paisaje ¡y estaba tan bonito! ¡Tomé muchísimas fotos!”, dijo Sofía, quien comentó que era la primera cascada que veía de cerca. “Estaba en shock, no pensé que llegaríamos tan cerca. El paisaje era tan hermoso. Había unas escaleras de roca, ¡estaban bien bonitas!”
Para Van, la vista desde la cima fue simplemente impresionante. Cuando finalmente llegó a la cima, estaba claramente asombrado. “¡Wow, esto está realmente muy alto!”, fue lo primero que pensó al contemplarlo todo. Agregó que fue “definitivamente más difícil que los demás senderos”. Aun así, llegar a la cima lo convirtió en algo inolvidable para él.
Gracias al generoso apoyo de la Fundación Prebys y la iniciativa Healing Through Nature, los miembros del Consejo Juvenil pasaron cuatro noches en Yosemite, lo que les dio la oportunidad de alejarse de sus rutinas diarias y vivir algo verdaderamente especial. Desde el inicio del viaje, se sentía un ambiente de emoción. Fue una oportunidad para explorar, conectar y crear recuerdos duraderos juntos.
Durante el viaje, los jóvenes estuvieron rodeados de los increíbles paisajes de Yosemite, desde árboles imponentes y montañas majestuosas hasta lagos tranquilos. Uno de los momentos más destacados fue caminar juntos hasta una hermosa cascada. Llegar a la cascada fue muy gratificante y poder estar allí en grupo, disfrutando el momento, lo hizo aún más especial. También acamparon en tiendas de campaña, lo cual fue una experiencia divertida y nueva para muchos. Estar al aire libre, desconectados y plenamente presentes hizo que todo se sintiera más emocionante y significativo.
A través de actividades grupales, comidas compartidas y tiempo dedicado a explorar, los miembros del Consejo Juvenil fortalecieron sus amistades y crecieron más unidos como comunidad.
Mid-City CAN agradece profundamente a la Fundación Prebys por hacer posible este viaje. Su apoyo ayudó a crear una experiencia que no solo fue divertida y emocionante, sino también significativa e inspiradora. Un agradecimiento especial a Manuel de Excursiones Acuáticas por guiar a nuestros jóvenes. El viaje a Yosemite creó recuerdos que durarán toda la vida.

El Equipo de Impulso a la Justicia Juvenil de Mid-City CAN tuvo el gusto de recibir al instructor de arte Rubén Alarcón y a Brooke Florian del Prison Arts Collective el 26 de marzo para una presentación y taller dinámicos. Los miembros de nuestro equipo tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar su creatividad en un espacio de apoyo, guiados por el enfoque inspirador de Rubén hacia el arte y la autoexpresión. Prison Arts Collective sigue trabajando para aumentar el acceso al poder transformador del arte brindando programación en prisiones y a comunidades impactadas por el encarcelamiento, basándose en la creencia de que el arte es un derecho humano y una poderosa herramienta para el cambio positivo.
Durante el taller, los participantes realizaron una actividad de dibujo reflexivo centrada en una rosa. Cada parte del dibujo fomenta una reflexión más profunda. La rosa representa algo por lo que están agradecidos o un aspecto positivo de su vida; la espina simboliza un desafío o momento de estrés al que se enfrentan actualmente; y el capullo representa algo que esperan con ilusión, ofreciendo esperanza, inspiración y motivación. Este ejercicio creativo brindó a los miembros de la comunidad una forma única de expresar sus pensamientos y emociones mientras fortalecían sus conexiones entre sí.
¡Gracias a Rubén, a Brooke y a todos los miembros de la comunidad que nos acompañaron! Apreciamos enormemente su presencia y nos encantó ver el increíble arte que se creó en conjunto.

Mid-City CAN está ayudando a difundir información sobre el Plan Integral Multimodal del Corredor SR 94 (CMCP). ¿Qué es?
