Volunteers are the Heart of City Heights
Love is one of the most precious gifts in the world and it comes alive through community.
Communities shine brightest because of the volunteers who selflessly give their time, compassion, and care to lift others up. On Friday, January 30, we gathered at the Price Philanthropies building to honor and celebrate the incredible volunteers whose dedication and kindness make City Heights stronger every day.
"I really enjoyed it because it brought the community and everybody together," said Maria Cortez, a Mid-City CAN and City Heights volunteer since the mid-1980s. "It shows that we in City Heights enjoy it here and we can all get together and get along because that's what we're about."
Youth Council alumna Salma was among the Mid-City CAN volunteers honored at the event. "This community has welcomed me when I moved here with a big heart, with warmth, so I thought why not also give back and do the same," said Salma who is currently a student at UC San Diego and, in addition to her time on Youth Council that secured $4.25 million for Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park, volunteered with GEM Coffee to lead neighborhood cleanups throughout City Heights.
District 9 Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera and Community Representative Diana Frias attended the celebration, presenting certificates to the volunteers and joining in on breakfast and giveaways. The room was filled with positive energy, connection, and the spirit of giving back.
"I'm happy to meet other people that are volunteers in the community like us and learn about other organizations that I'm not familiar with." said Ana Gonzalez, a Mid-City CAN volunteer who also lends her time to many groups, including Fern Street Circus.

January was full of action for our Youth Justice Momentum Team! Alejandro, Belen, and community partners including the Community Budget Alliance and Youth Will took the floor at the Board of Supervisors Community Budget Input Session on January 27 to advocate for a $250,000 feasibility study which works to advance equitable, community centered strategies that promote well-being amongst young people, access to transformative resources and long term closing down of the Juvenile Halls. The Department of Youth Development will end youth incarceration.
Meanwhile, interns Laila, Angela, and Brisa are gearing up to participate in the Ending Girls Incarceration Youth Leadership Panel + Solutions Lab, where they’ll explore youth-led solutions, trauma-informed practices, and the history and current landscape of juvenile justice.
On January 23, our team was thrilled to join the 📷 unveiling of a new mural at 37ECB. 37ECB supports students in grades 7–12 through traditional and independent study, including youth referred by probation, social services, or school officials. The mural was created by A Reason to Survive (A.R.T.S.), led by artist Sheena and her students, and celebrates the word that each student feels best represents community.
The team also kicked off their first meeting of the year on January 29 with special guests from the Commission on Police Practices: Yasmeen Obeid, Director of Community Engagement and Internship Programs, and Roger Smith, CPP’s new Executive Director. The presentation 📷 inspired lively discussion, and the team appreciated having their many questions answered. A big thank you to Yasmeen and Roger for visiting and supporting our work!
We’re proud to uplift Youth Justice team member Olie for organizing the Pride event 📷 “Dear Pride, From Stonewall” on January 29, which centered education, visibility, and celebration while bringing together youth, families, performers, and community organizations in an affirming space. Youth Council continues its advocacy to revitalize Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park, securing $4.25 million to date. They are gearing up to advocate in San Diego’s FY 2027 budget for $250,000 to fund a Deputized Senior Engineer position within San Diego Parks and Recreation, which would accelerate park construction and lower costs citywide.
Youth teamed up with The AjA Project and hit the streets of City Heights on February 9 to spread the word about their Arts in the Park project. Youth Council members shared their creative vision with the community. Their goal is to bring vibrant art to the restrooms at Henwood Park and make the space feel more welcoming for everyone.
On March 9, Youth Council is excited to return to Henwood Park to plant 10 more trees, adding to the 10 they’ve already planted over the past two years. Thanks to the Prebys Foundation’s Healing Through Nature grant, Youth Council is also heading to Yosemite National Park at the end of March for a once-in-a-lifetime camping experience!
On February 9, Mid-City CAN hosted MTS’s Fare Change Study Workshop at the Price Philantropies Building. MTS shared an overview of proposed fare changes and answered questions from the community, followed by small-group discussions on what matters most to riders: cost vs. service, feedback on MTS’s proposed fare change packages, and more.
"I enjoyed seeing the mothers and families who don't speak English still show up to the workshop. They don't see language barriers as a wall from staying informed on transportation and speaking up for our community's immediate needs. It's always a powerful thing to see firsthand," said ITCH member and Mid-City CAN volunteer Noel, a student at UC San Diego.

Los Voluntarios son el Corazón de City Heights
El amor es uno de los regalos más preciados del mundo y florece a través de la comunidad.
Las comunidades brillan más brillantes gracias a los voluntarios que, con generosidad, dedican su tiempo, compasión y cariño para ayudar a los demás. El viernes 30 de enero, nos reunimos en el edificio de Price Philanthropies para honrar y celebrar a los increíbles voluntarios cuya dedicación y bondad fortalecen a City Heights cada día.
"Lo disfruté mucho porque unió a la comunidad y a todos", dijo María Cortez, voluntaria de Mid-City CAN y de City Heights desde mediados de la década de 1980. "Demuestra que en City Heights disfrutamos de vivir aquí y que podemos reunirnos y llevarnos bien, porque de eso se trata".
Salma, egresada del Consejo Juvenil, fue una de las voluntarias de Mid-City CAN homenajeadas en el evento. "Esta comunidad me recibió con los brazos abiertos y con mucha calidez cuando me mudé aquí, así que pensé: ¿por qué no retribuir y hacer lo mismo?", dijo Salma, quien actualmente estudia en la Universidad de California en San Diego y, además de su participación en el Consejo Juvenil, que consiguió 4.25 millones de dólares para el Parque Conmemorativo del Oficial Jeremy Henwood, colaboró con GEM Coffee para organizar jornadas de limpieza en el barrio de City Heights.
El concejal del Distrito 9, Sean Elo-Rivera, y la representante comunitaria Diana Frias, asistieron a la celebración, entregaron certificados a los voluntarios y compartieron el desayuno y los obsequios. El ambiente estaba lleno de energía positiva, conexiones y espíritu de solidaridad.
“Me alegra conocer a otras personas que son voluntarias en la comunidad como nosotras y aprender sobre otras organizaciones que no conozco”, dijo Ana González, voluntaria de Mid-City CAN, quien también dedica su tiempo a muchos grupos, incluido Fern Street Circus.

¡Enero fue un mes lleno de actividad para nuestro Equipo de la Justicia Juvenil! Alejandro, Belén y socios comunitarios, incluyendo la Community Budget Alliance (Alianza Comunitaria Sobre el Presupuesto) y Youth Will, intervinieron en la Sesión de Aportes Comunitarios sobre el Presupuesto de la Junta de Supervisores el 27 de enero para abogar por un estudio de viabilidad de $250,000 que busca impulsar estrategias equitativas y comunitarias que promuevan el bienestar de los jóvenes, el acceso a recursos transformadores y el cierre a largo plazo de los centros de detención juvenil. El Departamento de Desarrollo Juvenil pondrá fin al encarcelamiento juvenil.
Mientras tanto, las pasantes Laila, Angela y Brisa se están preparando para participar en el Panel de Liderazgo Juvenil y Laboratorio de Soluciones para Poner Fin al Encarcelamiento de Niñas, donde explorarán soluciones lideradas por jóvenes, prácticas basadas en el conocimiento del trauma y la historia y el panorama actual de la justicia juvenil.
El día 23 de enero, nuestro equipo tuvo el placer de asistir a la inauguración de un nuevo mural en 37ECB. 37ECB brinda apoyo a estudiantes de 7.º a 12.º grado a través de estudios tradicionales e independientes, incluyendo a jóvenes derivados por los servicios de libertad condicional, servicios sociales o funcionarios escolares. El mural fue creado por A Reason to Survive (A.R.T.S.), bajo la dirección de la artista Sheena y sus estudiantes, y celebra la palabra que cada estudiante considera que mejor representa a la comunidad.
El equipo también celebró su primera reunión del año el 29 de enero con invitados especiales de la Comisión de Prácticas Policiales: Yasmeen Obeid, Directora de Participación Comunitaria y Programas de Pasantías, y Roger Smith, nuevo Director Ejecutivo de la Comisión. La presentación generó un animado debate y el equipo agradeció que se respondieran sus numerosas preguntas. ¡Muchas gracias a Yasmeen y Roger por su visita y por apoyar nuestro trabajo!
Nos enorgullece destacar a Olie, miembro del equipo de Justicia Juvenil, por organizar el evento del Orgullo LGBTQ+ "Querido Orgullo, Desde Stonewall" (Dear Pride, From Stonewall) el 29 de enero, que se centró en la educación, la visibilidad y la celebración, reuniendo a jóvenes, familias, artistas y organizaciones comunitarias en un espacio de apoyo. ¡Únete a la próxima reunión de Justicia Juvenil en Mid-City CAN el 19 de febrero! RESERVA LA FECHA: El sábado 28 de febrero, de 17:00 a 19:00, se celebrará una asamblea pública sobre justicia juvenil en San Diego en A Reason To Survive (ARTS), 200 E 12th St, National City. El Consejo Juvenil continúa su labor de abogacía para revitalizar el Parque Conmemorativo del Oficial Jeremy Henwood, habiendo conseguido hasta la fecha $4.25 millones de dólares. Se están preparando para solicitar en el presupuesto del año fiscal 2027 de San Diego $250,000 dólares para financiar un puesto de Ingeniero Superior Adjunto dentro del Departamento de Parques y Recreación de San Diego, lo que aceleraría la construcción de parques y reduciría los costos en toda la ciudad.
Los jóvenes se unieron al Proyecto AjA y salieron a las calles de City Heights el 9 de febrero para difundir información sobre su proyecto "Arte en el Parque". Los miembros del Consejo Juvenil compartieron su visión creativa con la comunidad. Su objetivo es llevar arte vibrante a los baños del Parque Henwood y hacer que el espacio sea más acogedor para todx.
El 9 de marzo, el Consejo Juvenil regresará con entusiasmo a Parque Henwood para plantar 10 árboles más, que se suman a los 10 que ya plantaron en los últimos dos años. Gracias a la subvención "Sanación a través de la Naturaleza" de la Fundación Prebys, el Consejo Juvenil también viajará al Parque Nacional Yosemite a finales de marzo para vivir una experiencia de campamento inolvidable.
El 9 de febrero, Mid-City CAN organizó el Taller del Estudio de Cambios en las Tarifas de MTS en el edificio Price Philanthropies. MTS presentó un resumen de los cambios propuestos en las tarifas y respondió a las preguntas de la comunidad, seguido de discusiones en grupos pequeños sobre lo que más les importa a las personas usuarias del transporte: costo versus servicio, comentarios sobre los paquetes de cambios de tarifas propuestos por MTS, y más.
"Disfruté ver a las madres y familias que no hablan inglés asistir al taller. No ven las barreras del idioma como un obstáculo para mantenerse informadas sobre el transporte y defender las necesidades inmediatas de nuestra comunidad. Siempre es impactante verlo de primera mano", dijo Noel, miembro de ITCH y voluntaria de Mid-City CAN, estudiante de UC San Diego.
